EFFECT OF MONOCHROMATIC INFRARED ENERGY ON CHRONIC SCIATIC PAIN

Abstract
Background: chronic Sciatica due to lumbar disc lesion is an important medical and socioeconomic problem that affects many people; the most important symptoms are radiating leg pain and related disabilities. Objective: this study was conducted to investigate the effect of adding monochromatic infrared energy to physical therapy exercise program in treatment of chronic sciatic pain. Methods: : Thirty subjects of both genders (15 males and 15 females) with age ranging from 30 to 45 years with chronic sciatic pain due to lumbar disc lesion voluntarily participated in this study, They were assigned in two groups: Group (A): study group, received monochromatic infrared energy, ultrasound and exercise ,Group (B): control group, received ultrasound and exercise only. Evaluation of functional abilities, pain and lumbar ROM done before starting treatment and after finishing it.Treatment sessions applied three times per week for four weeks.
Results: there was significant increase in functional abilities and lumbar ROM (extension and rotation to sciatic side) in favor to group (A) with p value equals (P value =0.009, 0.041 and 0.04) respectively, but there was non-significant effect in pain and lumbar ROM (flexion, side bending to sciatic side, side bending to normal side and rotation to normal side) with p value equals (P value=0.137, 0.06, 0.084, 0.342 and 0.83) respectively.

Conclusion: there was significant effect of adding monochromatic infrared energy system to physical therapy exercise program in functional abilities and lumbar ROM (extension and rotation to sciatic side) ,while there was no significant effect in pain and lumbar ROM (flexion, side bending to sciatic side, side bending to normal side and rotation to normal side).
